Rode DS2 Desktop Studio Arm Review

As content creators, we constantly experiment with different setup. We recently decided to upgrade the mic stand for our new Rode PodMic USB microphone. While we’ve been satisfied with various tripods and stands in the past, we were eager to try something that offered more stability and versatility for our desk set up. Enter the Rode DS2 Desktop Studio Arm.

Why the Rode DS2 Desktop Studio Arm?

Rode offers a range of mic stands and arms, but the DS2 caught our attention due to its robust build and positive reviews. Priced at around $90, it’s a bit more of an investment compared to basic stands like the Ilanzi stand we previously used (which costs around $15), but we were curious to see if the quality matched the price tag.

Unboxing Experience

The DS2 arrived promptly from Amazon, packaged securely in a stout box. The simplicity of the packaging mirrored the straightforwardness of the product itself. Inside, there were only a few components:

  • The Arm: Sleek and finished in matte black, the arm is designed to be non-intrusive and not distract from your video’s visual aesthetic.
  • The Base Plate: This hefty piece provides stability. Weighing around 3 lbs, it ensures the stand stays put on your desk.
  • Accessories: An Allen wrench, two screws for assembly and an adapter for various microphone types.

The minimalistic design meant that the setup was going to be quick and hassle-free.

Assembly Process

Setting up the DS2 was as simple as 1-2-3:

  1. Attach the Arm to the Base: Align the arm with the holes on the base plate.
  2. Secure with Screws: Use the provided screws and Allen wrench to fasten the arm securely. It’s important to tighten them adequately to prevent any wobble during use.
  3. Mount the Microphone: Depending on your microphone type, you might need the included adapter. In my case, attaching the Rode PodMic USB was straightforward. However, there are additional adapters you can purchase to help with setup.

Within minutes, the stand was assembled and ready for use.

First Impressions

Build Quality and Design

The first thing we noticed was the solid construction of the DS2. The weighty base and sturdy arm give it a premium feel. The matte black finish is both sleek and professional, ensuring that it doesn’t draw attention away from your content if it appears on camera.

Functionality

The DS2 offers excellent versatility:

  • Adjustable Positioning: The arm allows for easy adjustment of the microphone’s height and angle, catering to different recording setups.
  • Stability: Even when we accidentally bumped the desk, the DS2 remained steadfast. The microphone didn’t wobble or shift unless we intentionally moved it.
  • Desk Space Optimization: Unlike traditional tripod stands, the DS2’s design frees up valuable desk space. This is crucial for us when we’re demonstrating products or need an uncluttered workspace during recordings.

Is It Worth the Investment?

Absolutely! While the DS2 is more expensive than basic stands, the quality and functionality justify the price. This stand is for content creators who:

  • Record frequently: The ease of use and adjustability make the recording process smoother.
  • Value durability: This is a stand that will withstand regular use over time.
  • Need flexibility: The ability to quickly adjust or move your microphone out of the way is invaluable.

Final Thoughts

As creators, having the right tools can make a significant difference in both the quality of your content and the efficiency of your workflow. The DS2 has proven to be a valuable addition to our set up. Its combination of sturdiness, versatility and professional appearance makes it stand out among the other options.

If you’re in the market for a reliable and functional mic stand, we highly recommend giving the Rode DS2 Desktop Studio Arm a try. It has enhanced our recording experience and we anticipate it will continue to serve us well in future projects.
