Saramonic Blink 500 Review
When it comes to creating engaging videos, whether indoors or on trips outdoors, crisp audio quality is essential. Recently, we dusted off a microphone we already had and began testing out the Saramonic Blink 500 wireless microphone set. Although we purchased it three years ago, we haven’t used it in quite some time. With plans to diversify our video content, we realized it was the perfect time to try out this potentially game-changing gadget.
Discovering an Old Gem
The Saramonic Blink 500 is not just any microphone, it’s a wireless set that promises flexibility and high-quality audio capture. Despite buying it three years ago, it sat on our shelve of other gadgets until recently. While most of our video creation was primarily indoors, we needed a revamp. With that in mind, the need for mobile, high-quality audio became apparent. So, we dusted it off and put it to the test.
Technical Rundown
The set includes two transmitters and a receiver, which can easily attach to your camera. Each transmitter can clop onto your collar or jacket. In addition, they support lapel mics for even more discrete audio capture. What’s impressive is how these devices pair automatically when powered on. As a result, there’s no fiddling with settings or frequencies. The cost was about $199, which is quite reasonable for the features it offers.
Real-World Testing
We initially tested the microphone indoors and was immediately impressed by the sound quality. However, the real test was outdoors. With their open spaces and varying noise levels, a Las Vegas park served as the perfect testing ground.
We conducted several tests to check the audio quality at different distances – up to about 160 feet. The line-of-sight performance was stellar. Although the connection did drop when we turned away from the camera, it was expected with most RF devices. However, it reconnected seamlessly when we faced the camera again.
One thing I appreciated was the inclusion of a ‘dead cat’ windshield. When attached to the mic, it dampens the wind noise which can be a nuisance when recording outdoors. The windshield performed admirable, maintaining the audio clarity despite breezy conditions, which is often in Las Vegas.
Versatility for Video Creators
The flexibility that the Saramonic Blink 500 offers is invaluable, especially when you need to move around in your videos. Whether it’s a tutorial filmed in your studio or a documentary-style capture in nature, having a microphone that doesn’t tether you to your camera enhances the production quality immensely.
Moreover, the ability to remain wire-free without sacrificing sound quality open up creative possibilities that wired mics can restrict. From wide-angle shots to dynamic scenes, you can capture it all with consistent audio levels.
Final Thoughts
As we wrapped up our testing, we couldn’t help but appreciate the technology packed into the microphone system. It’s more than just a microphone; it’s a versatile tool that adapts to various filming environments and styles. While we have used more basic setups in the past, the move to sophisticated, compact wireless systems like the Saramonic Blink 500 is a significant upgrade for our video production.
It proves that the best tools are the ones you already have. You just need to explore their potential. Whether indoors or outdoors, this microphone system ensures your audience hears every work with clarity, making your content as professional as it deserves to be.
